Field trip reflection
By Natalie Richards
I absolutely LOVED the Shem creek kayaking trip! It was a wonderful experience! I had always wanted to go kayaking there, and It was so much fun. It was also a great workout, paddling the kayak. There were so many cool organisms, such as mullet, clams and so many oysters! In addition to these cool water creatures,we saw many seabirds, such as the brown pelican! Overall, my favorite organism would have to be the dolphin. We also learned about spartina grass! I loved learning about the history of the estuary and South Carolina. The most interesting fact that I learned was that pluff mud was originally spelled plough mud, and the african americans who spoke Gullah pronounced it “Pluff mud.” I think that is very interesting!
The two Ashley Hall hallmarks that I demonstrated the most was collaborative and discerning. I was collaborative because Myla, (my partener) and I worked together paddling. We both paddled to same amount and worked together to go fast. I was also discerning because I listened to the guides talk about the history and organisms, not talk. Also, I didn’t tear off spartina grass, or hurt the estuary in any way.
This field trip was a wonderful experience and I can’t wait for upcoming field trips in science!
